Protest This!
Who is a creative person that you believe has protested/challenged the norm through their work? How? Why? Show us an example.
A creative person that I believe has protested/challenged the norm through their work is Lady Gaga. But I personally like to refer to her as the Gaganator yee!!!! She has challenged the norms through her music, dance and fashions. I mean who else wears a Kermit the Frog(s) outfit or meat as a dress? only Gaga would. Plus she has always been very outspoken about her personal beliefs on sexuality.Such songs as lovegames and pokerface depict hidden messages about her sexuality.Plus she has stood up for even laws discrinating against illegal immigrants, as in one of her Arizona concerts. Furthermore she took discharged soldiers from the armed forces with her to the Vmas. It was a protest against the rights of gay/lesbian/bi soliders who can't speak about their sexuality. Overall I think that its nice to have outspoken people like Gaga around because then its easier for people to speak their minds to once taboo issues. Haha plus she has set many fashion and music styles, and now dance/techno music is very big because of her. In the end shes a perfect example of a creative person who helps break down walls.
A person who I believe challenges the norm through their work is Hyde, a Japanese singer who is in L'arc~en~ciel band. Why I think he challenges the norm is that well firstly I believe that all artists challenge the norm through their art because not only are they expressing a part of themselves but also good artists desire to do something out of the ordinary to put it simply stand out and do something never done before; be original. I think his music has a unique style that is not only refreshing but also reflects himself. He's not afraid to try out new things. His music can range from hardcore rock to soft soulful music and I look forward to see what new creative piece he will come out with next that will be out of the norm.
First is Evergreen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVXorEZeV8E
Then a much more upbeat rock music I Gotta Kick Start Now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0yuihEtbzw&feature=related
Bruce Lee. That name should be enough to provoke some thoughts of legend. When you talk about challenging the norm, Bruce Lee definitely did this when he went and created his own martial art, which is of course Jeet Kune Do. When he started teaching it to various students, the other traditional institutions of Chinese fighting arts issued their version of a "Cease and Desist" to him to stop teaching, so he challenged them to a fight to settle it, and he won.
Later on he would go on to forge his own path and legacy and establish himself as the greatest martial artist of all time.
This is one of my favorite scenes from his last movie, Enter The Dragon:
I feel that a person who has creatively challenged the norms is Steve Jobs. He is the mastermind behind Apples success in the media world today. He came up with new and innovative ideas that make his products different which broke through the norm of how we should view and listen to our entertainment. His different way of advertising really appealed to a large range of people which also helped skyrocket not only him but his company.
an overview and an example of what he has done can be seen on www.apple.com
I think odd nerdrum defied convention. He refused to accept modernism as the end all and be all. He dropped out of school and taught himself to paint like rembrandt. He paints apocalyptic scenes that are super creepy. He is now considered a modern master and has a painting hanging in the de young.
The street artist Neckface has protested the norm in one of the most controversial topics floating around today, religion. Neckface remains anonymous and few know what he truly looks like. His work is very graphic and violent, but includes so much detail down to the individual hairs on the body. Though realism is obviously not his intent, the surreal perspective of human nature that Neckface portrays is surely one of his own. Here's a sample of some of his work:
Madonna is an artist who has challenged the norms through her work. Back when Madonna was first starting out her music career, society was very closed minded and the portrayal of sexuality, religion and erotic outfits were no where near a society norm. Madonna has worn outfits that society would not consider appropriate like the cone shaped bra or just a pair of spandex, things that are very revealing. The sexual content of her videos as well was a step outside of society norms. Now we see sex and religion being portrayed like its nothing but back when she was first starting out, that was something that just wasn't talked about or portrayed. Madonna definitely took a step outside the box and pushed the boundaries of society. She didn't do this to be a rebel however. She felt that people's desires and religion and things that they believed in were things that should be creatively expressed, that should be out there in the open. She felt that not talking about the issues and just hiding your true personality just wasn't an option.
A creative person that I believe has protested/challenged the norm through their work would have to be Michael Jackson. When you think about Michael Jackson he is known as the "King of Pop". Jackson's 13-minute "Thriller" video became a classic and encouraged the young and timid MTV to air more black musicians. His songs were to inspire black musicians to acheive what did and more. He created his own dance move for instance, moonwalk/gliding, the famous "crouch grab", and his unquie popping skills that lead him to make his on choreo dances.
I also think Lady Gaga is creative person. She is great. First, she is creative by the way she dresses, acts, and sings. She does not afraid of saying that she is a lesbian. She broke the norm. She does not care what people think and say about her. She wears “weird stuffs” such as meat dress. She is also support society. She goes many countries in the world to support teenage and everybody love singing. She also writes her own song. She is great creative person.
Michael Jackson is a creative person that I believe has protested/challenged the norm through his work. How? Michael broke down racial barriers. According to L.A Reid, no one before Michael Jackson has had such an impact on pop culture, dance, music, entertainment, and buisness. Why? Because He was creative in every way throught his dance moves and music. An example would be Mtv. Mtv never played pop music videos, let alone, an african american pop artist. Then "Thirller" came along and changed everything. I feel that he changed the way people back then thought of music. It no longer had a color. You could not put Michael Jacksons music in a seperate "box" and seperate it from other artists, he belonged in every catagory.
This is his journey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfCnk7eJgAc
I think that the rap group Public Enemy protested through their work. They were all about "fight the power" and getting back at "the man". They would fight the power with hip hop and that is very creative, a lot more creative than just standing in front of a building and protesting.
A creative person that I believe has protested/challenged the norm through their work would have to be Banksy. Banksy's works include a lot of political symbolism that highlight things that the media may not bring forth, because it has a lot of negative conductations. In a way, his graffiti challenges the norm, because people usually view graffiti as vandalism as opposed to art.
Dave Chappelle easily defies our society's norms by creating skits that bring to light stereotypes of cetain groups. I believe he is the first comedian ever to talk about stereotypes in a way that causes people to think critically about how and why these stereotypes were created in the first place. They are also really funny.
A person that I believe that has challenged the norm through their work would be the creators of South Park Trey Parker and Matt Stone. I like how they took such a simple design and were able to create a crazy story lines using current issues we face today. They are able to get both opposing views and have them go against each other in many clever ways. For example there was an episode with weed to make make it illegal or not and they try explain that even though weed will help some people, everyone else would just abuse the system.
Hugh Hefner definitely challenged the norm through his work buy creating art through publishing nude pictures of women as art. At that time in the early 20th century, public media didn’t publish nude images of women. Creating playboy was scarcely a stretch for Hefner. Never before nude pictures had been successfully sent through the mail, but Hefner sold fifty thousand nationwide throughout Chicago on the day the magazine-more than ever someone can imagine. Many people suggest that Hefner’s Playboy magazine was the beginning of modern day magazines of this type such as Hustler, Penthouse, etc. Now if you look at mainstream magazines, you could see very similar depiction of nude or semi nude pictures of women.
A person (well, people) I think are creative would have to be the Beatles. They changed the music industry and the world forever. They challenged the norm because of the fact that their sound was so revolutionary at the time when they became famous. The music before them was softer and more swing-esque. So when the Beatles released their music to the U.S., many people didn't like them because of the fact that they were "too rock" for society. Their sound was very different than the typical artists of the time. They mixed many different sounds together in a good chunk of their songs. They were considered rebels, and many older people considered them poisonous to the younger generation. (Also because of the fact that they were known to take LSD & other drugs...) But they didn't care about what people thought of them; they continued to break the mold on the music industry, and in turn, have influenced many artists since. Even today, they are still as popular as ever. 4 million+ of their songs have been sold on iTunes, since they became a part of iTunes late last week.
Here's one of my favorite songs by them. It has many different transitions and the lyrics don't really make sense, but it shows their creativity, and how different their sound is.
Graffiti artists in general are creative people but are not seen as creative by everyone in the society. They produce their artwork mostly on walls and signs of streets. Some of the work they produce may be offensive but most of the time, it just shows the artists' freedom of expression. The police think that graffiti is considered vandalism and whoever is caught will be fined. I don't think this is fair because all graffiti artists are trying to do is to express themselves through their own style of art yet they are getting fined for it. I believe that there are some cities that are known for graffiti artworks and it may actually define a city's reputation. Clearly, laws hinder one's creativity even though others believe it is for the society's own good. here is a picture of graffiti on the subway: http://www.indymedia.org.uk/images/2008/08/405334.jpg how can this bring harm to the society?
Kurt Cobain challenged the mainstream norm of pop and hiphop during the late 1980's and significantly influenced music as a whole. He created a band known as Nirvana, the father of alternative rock. By 1991, Nirvana had released its breakthrough album: Nevermind, with a highly popular single: Smells like Teen spirit. Cobain invented alternative music and there were a plethora of sporadic bands imitating them. Today we have many major groups that exist solely because of Kurt Cobain such as the Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Blink 182, and Greenday.
I think Martin Luthor King Jr is creative person. He challenged society when it was normal that blacks weren't treated the same as white people. He fought for black people and made a speech based upon his beliefs. This helped push an end to racism.
I would consider Tyra Banks to be someone who is creative. She is creative because she challenged the norm of modeling. She protested against models being super skinny. She has become a role model for girls not just a super model. Through her Television shows she has shown and encouraged girls to be comfortable in their own skin.
The first that came to mind while reading thing question would be Eminem. He challenged the norm with his style he raps with and also by just being white. He protested against people believing the best raps are black. Any time a discustion comes up about the best rapper he is always being mentioned as the best or one of the best. Also he is extremly creative because he can verbalize his emotions and be able to make them flow and rythme.
A creative person that I believe have challenged the norm through their work is Mark Zuckerbeg. He is the founder of "Facebook". He has challenged the norm of how people view social network. He came up with new ideas on how to connect and communicate with people easily. Through facebook people are able to create personal profile, exchange messages, advertise ad promote businesses and also search for jobs. http://ati-university.com/?page_id=260
I believe one of the most important inventions of our time is the computer. Charles Babbage was a mechanical engineer who originated the concept of a programmable computer. He is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer. During his time in the 19th century, numerical tables were calculated by humans who were called computers, meaning one who computes, just like a train conductor is one who conducts. He noticed the high error rate of this human driven process and started to figure out ways how to calculate these tables mechanically. People originally resisted to his proposed idea because many would lose their jobs to machines.
The first person that came to my mind while reading this question would be Eminem. He protested the norm of rap music. The way he rapped down to his skin color. His music comes from his life and he finds a way to make it flow and rythme. He was white rapper when their wasn't any at the time.
i think vanilla ice is creative. especially since he was a white person attemtping to rap and all that good stuff, when there was only black people doing it at the time.
I would consider Lady Gaga as a norm person because she has toke lots of things to the next level things we have never seen before. She does so many things her way and really doesn't care what others think or say about her she is who she is one of them would be all the crazy clothes she wears they are clothing that we wont wear in public. She is creative because of all the things she has done and is still doing to this day like the songs she sings, the way her music videos are and the way she dances, the way she expresses herself on stage when she is performing a song she doesn't like doing things like others she is different from everybody else and that's a really creative person. Lady Gaga has inspired many people around the world but I think mostly teenagers she has inspired them to be who they want to be and to never give up on your dreams.
I think Thomas Edison is a real creative person. He was the scientist, inventor who totally brought our society to the new level of calling "modern society". Edison's greatest contribution for our society was the first practical electric lighting which was called electric light bulb.Beside that, He invented the phonograph, and made improvements to the telegraph, telephone and motion picture technology. He also founded the first modern research laboratory. "Genius Man"
I consider Pink as being a creative person who has protested/challenged the norm through her work. She is not afraid to speak her mind in her songs and doesn’t care what people think about her. For example, her song “Dear Mr. President” which she says is an open letter addressed to President George W. Bush, addresses her thoughts about the things he has done or actually would say he didn’t do as president. She didn’t want this song to be released as a single in the United States because she didn’t want it to seem like it was a publicity stunt. Though she knew she may lose fans because of this song, she didn’t mind because she wanted the people to know her thoughts about the president and for that many respect her for having the guts to speak the truth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRhJqbfJh54 -Athena Reclusado
I would consider Eminem as a norm person because he has toke lots of things to the next level things we have never seen before. His music has his real life experiences and he finds a way to make it flow. He chooses to be a white rapper when there wasn't any. Eminem’s music is different and very motivations and inspiring.
The person Who I believe that is a creative person that has protested/challenged the norm through their work in the entire history is Henry Ford. he was the founder of the Ford mobile Company and he development the assembly line technique to mass the car industry production. Ford had a global vision, he made lots of high wages and cheap consumer good. He always try to designed the new model of the car, update the horsepower for the engine, and to improve his production in the business cycle.
A Person i believe that has challenged the norms is Jay-Z. He was a very popular artist in the 1990's an is still today. His main productivity came in the 1990's with multi million records being sold. He changed the rap industry and attracted many new people into it. His lyrics were off the hook, he mainly spoke about real life experiences and issues that were happening in the day. Today he still raps but he is mostly involved in business. He is founder of rocca fella records and is part owner of the new jersey nets. Jayz is also one of the most financially fit rappers of all time. Besides all his fame i like his lyrics and is one of my favorite artist. One of the songs that i like is a "hard knock life."
Hitler, though his intentions were not the best, he did creatively protest what considered the norm. He created his own norm and even convinced a lot of people that an attempt to eliminate an entire race was ok. He managed to get away with it for a while and even conviced other countries it was ok. Thankfully, but nonetheless he was a creative protester.
So I could totally write this as a formal answer, but that would probably bore you to death. :P So, it's 2:36 in the morning, and I couldn't decide on someone that challenged the norm. I didn't want to say people like Madonna or Lady Gaga because they were obvious picks, so I looked around my room and noticed one novel; The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Then I thought about the storyline. Dan Brown wrote a book that challenged the bible by saying that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' lover. Now, the norm is that Jesus was a single man. Also, it held the belief that Jesus' bloodline had continued. Although this novel is merely a piece of fiction, it did stir up quite a commotion. :) I remember something about Catholic priests criticizing the book, or the entire catholic community itself was doing it. I'm not really sure. Anyway, My vote is for Dan Brown. :)
Louis Vuitton Malletier is one of creative people who protested and challenged the norm. Instead of coming up with affordable products, his company is one of the word's leading international fashion houses, which is featured on most luxury leather products such as: bags, clothes, sunglasses. Next, due to its image (the famous LV monogram) and hand-made products, LV becomes one of the most counterfeit and valuable brand in the fashion. Every products of LV have been kept as the same style since the 19th century. Being different from other fashion brand, LV didn't employees supermodels and celebrities to advertise their products, however, the company announced that the former USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev would appear in an ad campaign along with Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, and Catherine Deneuve. Many rappers, most notably Kanye West, have mentioned the company in certain songs.
Mikhail Bulgakov. A Russian writer who broke the norm by writing under censorship under the communist party. All other writers who didn't obey the communist got exiled. His famous writing was an attack on the communist. This takes an extreme amount of courage because he could have faced deadly penalties. The book is titled Master and Margarita. Kyle Smith
i would have to say that Lady Gaga is the most inspiring person because before i did not see that many people wearing crazy outfits! Now that her creativity came to us, many celebrities are showing up. I remember that one of the bio group presentation said that Lady Gaga's point was to show the world not to be afraid to show what they are; their weirdness, i think that she already made her goal because tons of people are just crazy as her! Not only outfits but also tons of people are re-creating her makeup, or using part of her creativity to come up with something similar to her idea.
Have you read or watch a movie called In The Name Of The Father? Gerry Conlon was a teenage who happened to be arrested for being an Irishman in England when IRA bombs were going off. The Police took Gerry, his friends, and his father into prison. The Police torture Gerry and his friends into a confession to a murder they had no part of. They were all send to jail. The father protested behind bars. After his father's death, Gerry continued the protest to be free and to bring down the IRA government. I believed they're creative because of how they had the will to protested and how they did it, especially after all they been through.
I think one of most creative people that chanlenged creativity has to be Michael Jackson, He truly revolutionized hiphop, he had many people jealous of his talents after all he was a great dancer, entertainer, singer. If it wasnt for Michael Jackson, there would be no moonwalk.
Mark Zuckerberg is the first creative person in my mind after I read this question. He created facebook, a social network service, it was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates. He has a good thing for the youth. www.facebook.com. The website's membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually added support for students at various other universities before opening to high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over.
A creative person that I believe has protested/challenged the norm through their work is Lady Gaga. But I personally like to refer to her as the Gaganator yee!!!!

ReplyDeleteThe first that came to mind while reading thing question would be Eminem.
ReplyDeleteA creative person that I believe have challenged the norm through their work is Mark Zuckerbeg. He is the founder of "Facebook". He has challenged the norm of how people view social network. He came up with new ideas on how to connect and communicate with people easily. Through facebook people are able to create personal profile, exchange messages, advertise ad promote businesses and also search for jobs.

ReplyDeleteThe first person that came to my mind while reading this question would be Eminem. He protested the norm of rap music. The way he rapped down to his skin color. His music comes from his life and he finds a way to make it flow and rythme. He was white rapper when their wasn't any at the time.
ReplyDeletei think vanilla ice is creative. especially since he was a white person attemtping to rap and all that good stuff, when there was only black people doing it at the time.
ReplyDeleteI would consider Lady Gaga as a norm person because she has toke lots of things to the next level things we have never seen before.

"Genius Man"
ReplyDeleteI consider Pink as being a creative person who has protested/challenged the norm through her work.

ReplyDeleteI would consider Eminem as a norm person because he has toke lots of things to the next level things we have never seen before.

ReplyDeleteA Person i believe that has challenged the norms is Jay-Z.

ReplyDeleteSo I could totally write this as a formal answer, but that would probably bore you to death. :)

ReplyDeleteLouis Vuitton Malletier is one of creative people who protested and challenged the norm.
ReplyDeleteMikhail Bulgakov. A Russian writer who broke the norm by writing under censorship under the communist party. All other writers who didn't obey the communist got exiled. His famous writing was an attack on the communist. This takes an extreme amount of courage because he could have faced deadly penalties. The book is titled Master and Margarita.

i would have to say that Lady Gaga is the most inspiring person because before i did not see that many people wearing crazy outfits!

ReplyDeleteI think one of most creative people that chanlenged creativity has to be Michael Jackson, He truly revolutionized hiphop, he had many people jealous of his talents after all he was a great dancer, entertainer, singer. If it wasnt for Michael Jackson, there would be no moonwalk.
ReplyDeleteMark Zuckerberg is the first creative person in my mind after I read this question.
