Obstacles? What Obstacles?

In chps 12 & 13 Weiner discusses creative "obstacles". Do you agree with him? Disagree? What are some obstacles for you personally? For others? Show us an example!

  1. weiner talks about different obstacles or blocks that prevent people from being creative. Some of these blocks are social, economical, legal, and more such things. i completely agree that these presures affect our ability to express our creativity, but with the change in times come the hanges in the diferent pressures that we face. as history shows us from how society has changed its way of thinking about women and slavery has allowed many more pople to express their creativity.

  2. I agree with Weiner that there are many obstacles that hinder creativity. Along with the social obstacles there are many internal and emotional ones that could block someones creativity. They include internalized doubts, criticisms, negative self images and much more. I feel that internal and emotional obstacles hinder my creativity more than social ones because when I start to doubt my idea I don't even want to pursue it or think about how to put it into action. I get stopped even before I try to start my creativity. I think others would probably feel the same obstacles as me.

  3. In life there are many different types of obstacles. I agree with Weiner that there are emotional, social, a well as many oher types of obsticles when wanting to be creative. Some obstacles for me is wodering what others would think and the obstacle of getting over judgements towards my creativness.

  4. I agree that there are definitely inhibiting obstacles in life, especially self-esteem. I feel that this one is the most inhibiting because when a person has low self esteem, they're afraid to share their work, and even afraid to fully express themselves through their work in fear that it will be rejected and not appreciated to its full extent. I feel this way exactly when I plan to share a creation or a new song or something like that, because I always think in the back of my mind "what if they don't like it?" and the thought is overwhelming and mortifying to the thought.

  5. In chapters 12 & 13 Weiner talks about all kinds of obstacles that can come up when trying to be creative. I agree with him when he says that there are many obstacles that can come up in life. I believe the biggest obstacle in society would be criticism. Criticism is basically is basically the judgment of others. Peoples mind set can be altered because of some one else's judgment. More physical boundaries would be such as hunger, exhaustion, workload, sickness and etc. Personally, I think that resources is a big obstacle in society for creativity. Without the necessary resources people can't expand their creative mind and grow imagination.

  6. I agree with Weiner. He was right when he talked about emotional obstacles. That's the one I identify with. It's hard to want to create when you have family problems upsetting you.

  7. Aly Rajah:

I agree 100% Weiner states that obsticles restrict people's creativity
economically, dealing with money, some people have creativity that require alot of money however some may not have that kind of money, socially, there is a front put up that people need to follow fashon for example in order to fit in, therefore for most people..want to fit in and feel wanted therefore restricting their creative style

i like to just add on by saying I agree and like the women and slavery comment

this video just goes to show that there are standards for fashion which puts a huge restriction on creativity

  8. I agree with Weiner about creative obstacles. There are plenty of things that determines whether one is creative or not. My shyness personally effects my creativity. I sometimes do not want to express myself if i am out of my comfort zone, and that holds me back a bit. I would probably have more creative input if i wasnt as shy. For others, i think an obstacle for creativity would be criticism. Good criticism can lead to more creativity, bad criticism could diminish creativity. It all depends on the person.

  9. I agree with the obstacles Weiner talks about in chapters 12 and 13 because of the fact that people have set stereotypes and views of people based on their physical features/looks. Race and gender are big obstacles that people deal with on a daily basis. I definitely agree that these factors hinder creativity, because they can get in the way of people's creativity, since people judge the person over their idea of creativity. For example, in the book, he uses the example of the African American female lesbian, who has to prove herself even more than say a White, straight male, because of the fact that the male is considered the "superior" out of the two. That way, it makes it harder for the female to be creative, because she has to work twice as hard to prove herself to be just as good/creative as him.

For me personally, the financial obstacle gets in the way of my creativity, because I don't have an excess amount of money to spend on a lot to things. I absolutely love interior design, so when I have an interest in designing something or redesigning/redecorating my bedroom, it gets hard to do that because of the fact that I can't just go out and buy new furniture, decor, or paint. Therefore I can't be too creative, because I have to use the things I already have.

  10. I agree with Weiner about the obstacles that restrict one's creativity. Life isn't perfect and when one person wants something, it doesn't always go their way. There are obstacles people must face such as dealing with fear and/or being discriminated against. We always judge other people whether we know it or not. And these judgments can hinder one's creative output.
One obstacle that I deal with in terms of creativity is insecurity. Sometimes i don't know if what i do is good enough no matter how hard i try. I've had teachers tell me that my work wasn't good enough simply because it wasn't creative although i spent a lot of time on it. So that kind of steps in the way in what i do. I feel that other people have different obstacles depending on their experiences in life.

  11. I both agree and disagree with Weiner about obstacles. Obstacles can hinder one from thinking and behaving freely, being productive and creative. But at the same time obstacles can effect, influence one to be more creative.

Social and religious obstacles can be so strong and totally block some thoughts and acts. For example specially in extremely islamic countries, religious obstacles unite with gender based obstacles and restrict women totally. Women can not go out alone, can not dress up freely, can not drive,... obviously don't have any source to be creative.

On the other hand I believe people need some obstacles to be creative. Very rarely people write poems about how happy they are. When people have problems it is more likely they will express themselves, their feelings by writing poems, novels, diaries or by painting pictures. For example as we see at the class, Picasso painted a picture of the violence seen, he was sorry for that and wanted to express himself. That applies to me as well when I feel sad or bored, I paint oil paints. If I am enjoying my life, having fun, I don't spend my time writing poems, painting at my house. An other example, because one don't have enough money to buy expensive designers clothes, s/he might want to sew s/her own clothes and can create out standing designs.
Actually extreme feelings and needs drive people to be creative. For that reason, emotional, financial or any kind of obstacles can cause extreme feelings, needs and those can influence people to be more creative.

  12. In chapters 12/13, Weiner discusses many creative obstacles such as: emotional blocks, religious/cultural blocks, political oppression, and social oppression. For the most part, yes I do agree with him. The obstacle that stands out most, in my opinion, would have to be emotional blocks. For my personality, I believe my greatest creative obstacle would have to be my self esteem, which I consider an emotional block. I believe my low self esteem/insecurities hinders my creativity because when I feel insecure I tend to consider all the negative feedback I might get from others. For others, I feel the obstacles to creativity are endless. It can range from emotional blocks (depression, fear, etc), religious/cultural blocks (values/beliefs), social oppression (discrimination), and political oppression (government/law). Since everyone is different, although one of the obstacles mentioned previously might not be an obstacle for you, it can be an obstacle for someone else. Therefore, I feel all of these can be creative obstacle for a person, depending on who.

  13. weiner talks about blocks that keep people from being creative. Examples of these blocks are social, economical, legal etc.. I agree that these can effect creativity because they can put you into jail if you do otherwise. Personally obstacles for me are success, I say that because I'm very focused on doing well that I sometimes don't think creatively, I just do whats in front of me.

  14. i agree with Weiner, that obstacle limits creatvity. I love drawing even though I am not really good at that. I try to creat what i love to draw. But I was laughed. since then, I never try to draw or do something that I am not good at.

  15. I agree with weiner that there are obstacles that limit peoples creativity. One of the biggest obstacle that people encounter that limits creativity is social oppression. This is one of the obstacles that limits my creativity because people assume that they way you look and the stereotypes made about your race will determine the kind of person you are. Bad stereotypes that come with your race allows people to judge the way your gonna be as a person.

  17. I agree with some obstacles he states in chapters 12 and 13. One of the obstacles that caught my attention was Education & Knowledge. The fact that there has to be a "right answer" a lot of the time just infuriates me, especially when there's a reward for it. Does there ALWAYS have to be a right answer, especially for creativity? I think NOT.

I definitely have some obstacles against me and creativity. One, when I dance or do colorguard, my dad happens to be a gigantic pain in the ass of an obstacle. He thinks colorguard is a girly thing to do. Hell no it is. It's a way for me to express myself. Also, society is another obstacle I, and probably a lot of other males, have to deal with. Supposedly a man is supposed to act tough, be strong, not cry, not be emotional or show our feelings, not be a freaking sissy, and so forth. The only way a man can cry in public is if something terrible had happened to him. So pretty much, I'm not supposed to act human in public. What I say to that? Screw them. I mean, I still don't cry in public because of it, but it's ridiculous. Yea, I probably just ranted right now, so sorry! xD I tend to scream a lot of my feelings out online rather than in person.

  18. I agree with Wiener, about the obstacles that he mentions in chapter 12/13. He mentioned several obstacles that we have in our real lives. Racism, sexism and emotional expression are the major obstacles, I found within our society today. Most of the people don’t want to listen to others' ideas because of their difference; race, color and gender. They think that they shouldn’t listen to them because they came from a different background.
According to me, my biggest obstacle is emotional expression. Even though I believe that I have a creative idea, I don’t want to tell others. I think my ideas will not have any potential for the society, even without giving a chance. I know, there many people out there, they feel exactly the same as I do.

  19. Yes I agree with Weiner about creative obstacles. Weiner talks about different obstacles that prevent people from being creative. Some these obstacles are religion, social, emmotional, discrimination etc. Some obstacles for me personaaly is the emmotional obstacle. I think about what people will think of me when i come up with a new idea. Some obstacles for others may be social and discrimination obstacles. Their gender and race may hinder their creativity since they are from a lower class and their creativity may be rejected. gillian kpodjie

  20. Weiner states that there are many obstacles that prevent people from being creative. The obstacles range from economical to social obstacles. I agree with Weiners theory because I do believe obstacles such as racism, classism, sexism, discrimination, religion, etc prevent people from being creative. For example, a poor person and a rich person have the same idea, but the rich person would be credited as creative because he has more power with his money.

  21. That Weiner think creative is obstacles which is a fact, and I agree with his statement. not only creative is obstacles, life is limited too. in chapter 12& 13 he focus mostly on the new technology and the educational system. he figured out that in the society there are many problem that is still need to be solved and people need to bring the new. for example racist, sex and gender, color. people judge of where you from mostly. but still in this world there are still many big issue like this and which some problem where still obstacles.

  22. I agree with Weiner when he talks about there being obstacles to creativity. I would say racism, sexism, and emotional obstacles are the worst. We see it happen all the time to people in everyday life. Personally I have a lot of emotional obstacles, this can be both a good thing and a bad thing. When i'm angry or sad I tend to write my most creative poems, but that still doesn't take away from the fact that i'm not in a good mood...although at times writing does help me get out my feelings and feel better.

  23. Some creative blocks Weiner talks about include material, emotional, political, religious and consequential blocks. I believe that these are all obstacles individuals would have to overcome or deal with when creating, they can be influential and limit what an artist can or can not do.

Some obstacles that pertain specifically to me are religion, classism and sexism. Because of the certain beliefs I have in my religion it can affect my judgment, as well as barriers of what I have in my life being female and middle class. There are still struggles among women having equal opportunity and what society views as a woman's role.

For others they can easily be blocks of racism and classism, due to their ethnitiy and how well off they are. What they can afford to create what needs to be done.

I definitely agree with Weiner's views on obstacles affecting creativity. There is a lot of discrimination towards different groups out there that limits people's creativity.

For me personally, I have really bad public speaking skills. This is a huge obstacle towards my creativity because when I was younger, I wanted to pursue a path in marketing. I wanted to be the guy who comes up with the ideas for commercials for products. But now I realize I cannot do this because I am scared to present in front of people.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I definitely agree with Weiner and the obstacles that he discuses. In my opinion, I believe social/economic and emotional obstacles are a few of the most difficult for people to overcome. It is very hard for someone to implement and put their creativity into action if they do not have the resources or the ability to acquire those resources to do so. Likewise, it is very hard to be creative if someone is not in the right state of mind. For example, if that person had a death in the family, it would be difficult to focus their attention on being creative.

For me, it is very hard to be creative if I am busy worrying about things that if I were to neglect, they would result in negative consequences on my life.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Obstacles to creativity can come in many forms. The examples Weiner uses range from financial situations, to environment to the color of ones skin. For certain individuals all the stars need to align for them to be their most creative, or at least feel like their creative potential is at a maximum. Personally I feel money can prohibit some creative ideas. If I wanted to try a new recipe or craft but did not have the money for the exact ingredients or materials, it would either prevent my creativity, or force me to think hard and develop a new way to get what I want done.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I do believe in obstacles getting in the way of out creativity. It isnt preventable though so we have to try to overcome those obstacles. One of my obstacles is my emotional blocks. I have a lot of responsibilities and a lot of things to worry about such as money and school so as I am busy working and studying I have no time to be creative.

  28. I agree with Weiner because I have experienced many obstacles in my life. There are so many things in this world that must be done just so you can live day to day, such as work. Right now in my home studio I can't afford some equipment because I don't make enough money. Therefore my creativity is being put on hold until I can afford the equipment I need to produce music. Also the human mind is the biggest obstacle because it's the mind that tells you what you can and can't do, what you're willing to try, and what boundries you're willing to break. I respect those who are willing to try new things and not conform to the society norms.

  29. I agree with Weiner that there are obstacles that block our creativity. Things like criticism, self imagine, social, and self esteem are examples of these obstacles we face. For me I believe that the one thing I have a problem with is my self esteem. I have not been able to express myself toward others due to my shyness. I often feel afraid of giving my opinion and sharing my ideas because I feel that I would just be rejected.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I most def agree with Weiner there really are numerous obstacles that can block our flow of creativity. I would have to say for me personally its the whole being criticized and self doubt thing. Which falls into the emotional block category more so. I had a time when I was in high school working on a painting where I didn't touch it for a week. There was alot of pressure because I was one of my teacher's favorite students. Personally I can be my biggest judge because I can be a HUGE perfectionist when it comes to my art. Just like the chapter said I was stalled in my work from be at my full potential. But then I snapped out of it and was like I'm in this AP class for a reason and finished my painting in the end. I mean it took a while but I got it done, so I do believe that we sometimes have emotional blocks. But in response we have to trust our selves and let go of our fears and do what we do best=)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes I agree with him. I feel that he barely touch on the subject of obsticles I feel that there are plenty more personal obsticles out there that prevent creativity from being fully attainted that weren't discuessed. My biggest obsticle would economical. Trying to be creativity cost a lot of money. If I had all the money in the world then I could finally create some of my wildest dreams.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I definitely agree with Weiner. All the blocks he mentioned, social, emotional, ect hinder creativity. I know that with me, I'm shy& I doubt myself alot and so it's hard to be creative when I don't wanna end up just looking stupid. For others I think sterotypes and criticism can hinder their creativity. Everyone has some self doubt about themselves, its only natural. criticism, depending on bad or good can make a person want to keep expressing themselves or not. Also the fact that we already have stereotypes about certain people would make it hard for them to be creative. We judge them by the way they look and they'll end up spending most of their time trying to defend that criticism instead of bringing out what they're really good at and enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agreed with Weiner that there are many different obstacles to overcome for creativity. Through out history there was has been Religion, Economic, Political, social, emotional, etc obstacles. Personally I would have to go with emotional as my biggest obstacle. Everything I do is effected by my emotion, if I'm depressed or angry i wouldn't want to do anything. All i would want to do is just sleep all day in bed. Many for others I would have to say discrimination is their biggest obstacle. Everyone in the world is judgment and stereotypical. When you judge the person by the way they look, act, talk, dress, walk, watch, listen to, involved in, etc you assume they don't have the "mental creativity".

    ReplyDelete
  34. Agree. Some obstacles would be the expectation of my mom and dad. They have different goals for me while i have mine. There's also society's boundaries between whats right and wrong. I was also raised catholic. So I'm not expected to express other religions.

    -Mark Eroles

  35. I agree with Weiner because there are so many things that limit people. For example there is also the way people say about others just because the way they dress or the people they hang out with they say that the people you hang out with is the type of people you are. So I agree with Weiner because I think that its true that people criticize other people of what they are.

  36. I absolutely agree with Weiner about these points when he discussed about the obstacles that block our creativity . I think political oppression can be the biggest obstacles that can separate people with their creativity. Because there should be big different when we live in freedom countries with unlimited about the creativity than a country which control people's creativity.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I do agree Weiner. For me, a definite obstacle was the fact that I came from another country and I had to learn and understand the culture here before I can be considered the slightest bit creative from those who were born and raised here. Now I'm using this foreign tongue to create elaborate spoken word poems, in which many from this country do consider creative.

  38. Material, religious, emotional, political, and legal are some of the creative blocks that I totally agree with Weiner. Obstacle somehow limits one's creativity. When you are excited in doing something, these creative blocks have very big impacts that stop u from archieving ur goals. Honestly, I want to be a vocalist, but how come I could make my dream come tru when my biggest obstacle is being shy of the crowd. I'm striving to overcome with it, even pray to God. However, it doesnt work, at that time there is thing in my mind " God knows what good for me"

  39. In chapters 12 and 13, Weiner states that there are emotional, physical, mental, political, legal, and societal obstacles that can all get in the way of creativity and hinder it's progression. They're all obstacles of life in general, such as a job, family, friends, the law, politics, and even our own self-doubt and worry. We either set our own standards so high for ourselves, or let someone else set their own standards for us and try to abide by them and be creative by them instead of purely for ourselves and in and of ourselves. Suffice it to say that I agree with Weiner because I can speak from experience.

For me personally, I encounter a lot of obstacles with being creative whenever I dance. As I've stated before, I'm a bboy, and in a vast world chock full of many creative and unique bboys and bgirls, I just have to work that much harder to stand out on my own. Before, I used to just watch everyone else and then would only do what they did, in effect being nothing more than a copycat. Then I had a reality check and I realized I had to develop my own style and flavor.

One of the ways I overcame my fears and self-doubt was the very first time I battled in an actual bboy competition, I may not have done as well as I wanted, but at least I finally stepped up and did it.

  40. I agree with weiner that there are obstacles that limit ones creativity. We have seen throughout our existence that people have been limited to create because a greater power has power over there abilities. For example slavery, race, political, religion. One that stands out the most for me is fear because we as people have the fear to create something that may be critized by other people or group. So we limit our creativity based on the fear we allow other people implement in us. For me i let the fear of what my collegues would say if i created something. Ofcourse nothing we do will please everybody but our own mind makes us think we will fail.

  41. I agree with Weiner that there are many obstacles that hinder creativity. These include emotional, physical, mental, political, legal, and societal obstacles that can all get in the way of creativity.

For me, the biggest obstacle to my creativity is my religion, (Christianity) because of the limitations that are placed on me that defines what Christianity should be about. If I were be creative, it would need to be "presentable" to people at church and thus the "box" has also been defined for me.

I think that emotional obstacles hinder others, as that depression can cause one to be so sullen that psychologically their mind is not in the greatest thinking state. Though emotional obstacles also may hinder me at times as well, (but not as bad as religion) there have been moments where negative emotions allow me to express and take out those emotions in my artwork.

Personally i am not able to point out my obstacles. 44. I agree that Weiner has given his thesis and examples that could prove to the obstacles blocking the creativity such as: emotional blocks, cultural blocks, education and knowledge… People would have a perfect time to create and develop their ideas without these challenges. However, everything gets 2 sides. Sometimes, these obstacles are also considered to be part of the encouragements pushing up the creativity as well.
Personally, emotion hinders my creativity. Sometimes, when I’m sad, worried or feel competitive inside me, I could not focus on creating on developing anything.

  45. I agree with weiner when he mentions that there are many obstacles to personal creativity. the ones that i agree with the most that he mentions are economic, physical, and political. I agree with these the most because i believe those are some of my obstacles. not so much political but physical and economical. physical is because i am a female people dont expect me to be strong or good at sports when i have to say i am pretty damn good at. An Economical obstacle for me is money. when i play badminton it is hard to play for long because of my injury but right now, i can not get the surgery because my parents need to save up money and they both cannot work due to their own injury. this makes it hard for me to show how good i am and how creative i can be in badminton.

  46. Yup. I agree with Weiner. Obstacles do limit our creative potential and productivity as a whole. Silent discrimination occurs in everyday life and is impossible to avoid. Racism is inevitable in today's meta-society. On average, African Americans and Hispanics make 20% less money than Caucasians as of 2010 according to cnn.com.
Another type of discrimination that is prominent is the height of a person. Leadership positions almost require interviewees to have above average height.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Some of these problems include racism and peers. When racism takes place, no one will consider the piece because of the person who made it but if they favor the person then racism does not come into play. Peers have in impact because you want them to like what you like. If they don't like it, you won't. I do agree with Weiner. He speaks the truth. For example, if you draw something and you like it but your friend doesn't, you don't like it as much

  48. I do agree, i think that a major obstacle have to be my parents. They are a restriction the to the person I could have been. Some obstacles for other would be if they didn't speak the right language. That would hinder their potential a lot. And also another complication that some might run into is that America has a definition of creativity that is considered modern and if you are traditional then you might have a huge problem to deal with.

  49. Some of the obstacles to creativity, that Weiner mentions are emotional blocks, economic, political and legal restrictions, discrimination, religios and cultural blocks. I agree with Weiner that all these obstacles previously mentioned do restrict creativity. I think that my biggest obstacle has been self-critisism and my parents due to my "traditional" cultural background. But yes i do believe that any person is restricted when developing their creativity if they have to worry about having to follow values, rules, and emotions.

  51. I agree with Weiner. I think that a major obstacle have to be my parents. My parents are strict and prevent me from becoming open minded and free. An obstacle for others would be to have their vote and voice heard. There creativity would be locked inside and wouldn’t benefit anyone.

  52. I agree with Weiner that there are many obstacles that hinder our creativity. Some are emotional, social, internal and cultural just to name a few.

I believe my major obstacles that hinder my creativity are internal and social. My internal is the biggest one. I'm always hard on my self and want to strive for perfection.Social is another major one because I constantly think "what will people think if i say this or if I voice my opinion about this?" For example, sometimes in a class, I will have a good idea or an opinion and this is rare because I usually don't really have an opinion, so when I do come up with something, I would like to share it. Anyways, I will think of a good idea and maybe i'll be too shy to voice it out so I don't say anything because I dont' think it's an actually good idea, it's just in my head or someone will make fun of my idea so I end up not saying it. Then a few minutes later someone will say it and then I become disappointed and hard on myself because I could've said that.

  53. I do agree with Weiner about having obstacles that prevent us from being creative. One of my biggest obstacle in my life are my parents. why? because they are very strict with pretty much EVERYTHING! For instance, i cant get home late, why? just because i'm a girl! i cant have my ear pierce (top part) because they think its not appropriate! and more! It is very frustrated because its like they dont trust me! and that makes me feel down because in someway i wanna be creative but they are always preventing me to show myself to the world!
