Dead + White + Male = Ideal?
Why do we consider the "Dead White Men" to be the creative ideal? Why Da Vinci, Einstein, Plato & Shakespeare? How do we relate to them today?
When we think of creative, one will generally think of old dead people that changed the way we think of things today, the universe, god, the sun, etc. all these things, these dieas, were changed by old dead white men. because at the time they were the biggest revelations of the time and they took many many years for anyone to prove or acknowledge them. if someone were to mention a creative person today odds are you wouldnt know who it is because his ideas havent been spread throughout the world and proved. in a hundred or so years when we are dead, the creative of today is dead, people will know their name as we know Da Vinci, Einstein and such. its not that they have to be dead to be known just that it takes a long time for their name to be spread, and in the past it was only white males that were allowed to remotely express their views.
There's a saying out there that history is written by the victors, or rather, those who come out on the winning side. We have been taught and led to believe that the greatest achievements in creativity and innovation have all come from these "dead white guys" because they are the ones who mass-marketed their ideas and products, even if it wasn't their own original creation.
I like to think that we relate to them in a more positive aspect, in the manner that we can inspire each other and take ideas from each other, because back then, every one of these "dead white guys" must have been inspired from someone else or from something else, much in the same way that us nowadays become inspired off of each other.
We consider the "dead white male" to be creative because the ideas and concepts that they have come up with are usually ideas that have a positive effect on society. Their ideas are usually very interesting and appealing and have left their mark on the way we view things now. There are usually no colored people or women from history that are deemed as super creative or innovative due to the fact that these groups were repressed and not acknowledged as much as white males were in the past.
In times now we also view people that have made a positive contribution to society as creative too. For example many people believe that Steve Jobs is very creative for creating many apple products that have changed the way we view electronics in society now. We now have electronics that due virtually almost everything from keeping track of our daily schedule to managing our netflix queue lists. Being creative is not only limited to "dead white males" in our current society, it is something anyone can be if they have made a big enough positive impact that everyone knows about it.
There is a reason why we do look at these figures as the ideal way of seeing the world. Plato to philosophy, Da Vinci, to art, Einstein to science. The reason is that these historical figures who have passed made real contributions that were in fact creative. It is because of their contributions that we see the world as we do today. Although these "dead white males", are considered as such because of a few points. During the time women were not allowed to do much of anything. This could have easily suppressed the findings of many other things for the same fields that these males have been recognized for. The common Anglo ancestry of these figures is because of the fact that it is the European culture that decided to take into account of all findings that their ideas, not like some other cultures, and can also explain why these ideas are able to stand the test of time.
These men fill the idea of the "creative ideal" because they are the ones who basically "changed the game". These men have paved the way for others, they have given them the OK to go beyond what is "ideal" during their times. Plato asked the questions that no one had asked before, he searched for answers instead of just believing the word of others. He made theories about people, about life. Da Vinci painted some of the most beautiful pieces that anyone had ever seen. Einstein used his genius to answer questions by figuring out complex formulas. Basically, these men are seen as the "creative ideal" because they sort of created it.
The dead white male are creative because the concepts that they have come up with are ideas that have changed the world in a good way;like Da Vinci and Einstein concepts have changed the way we view the world and they have turned just a smilpe idea in to something new and taken it to the next level.
There are still people today that are change the world with there ideas like Steve Jobs;he is very creative for creating in perfecting apple's products and he has changed the way we view simple devices. We now can touch a button on the screen and talk to other people across the world and also see what they see.
These dead white men went against what was normal and accepted during their time period and took creativity to the level that it should have achieved many years before. They broke away from the idea that all things are created for and in gods name and explored the boundless frontier that is creativity. Einstein took solving equations to a whole new level in the science world, and Da Vinci created works that would have been considered blasphemous or unacceptable in a previous time. These dead white males are the reason that creativity is so alive today.
These dead white men were considered the creative ideal because they contributed to the Western conception of creativity. Their ideas helped us move towards a more heliocentric view, moving away from the church's hierarchy, expanded perspectives and capitalism.
Da Vinci, Einstein, Plato and Shakespeare went against common beliefs and against the church's authority. They experimented, reasoned and explored searching for truth.
These men are relatable because they searched and solved problems that went against common beliefs and authority. Today, even students and scientists push the limits of authority to see truth, even from the government. We are all searching for a solution to problems, scientists especially searching for the betterment of mankind. Students test boundries and question authority, regarding their rights and powers over the general public.
DEad white men are always the creative ideal because they were the majority of people that actually put their ideas out there an known to public. They helped us move from where they were to where were are today. I believe that if it wasn't for the dead white men, we wouldn't have the society that we have full of creativity. Also, it was known back then for only really white men to have ideas. They were known for their status so really they were the only ones that were allowed to contribute, because all we learn about in history books are majority dead white men. It's like the presidents of the United STates. Now that ideal has changed a little because of Obama. One baby step at a time.
We relate to them today because they were the ones that put out their ideas even though they sometimes went against social norms. If they didn't rebel against society's expectations, we wouldn't even have the clue to start to because it's tradition. But now there are kids everywhere creating and expressing ideas about their feelings because we have this concept of creativity and it is still continuously being taught in schools.
The "Dead White Men" represent these 3 great creators, who have changed the way we look at things in art, philosophy, literature, and science. That is why they have become the creative ideal.
These men, creations came from their minds and not by influence of others. They created their own style. Because they took risks, they change the way we see the world in art, science, philosophy and literature.
We relate to them now because they proved that you can think outside the box, set your mind to do what you want it to do. Take risks when it comes to creating. As long as it does not harm others, but challenge their minds.
"Dead white men" are considered to be the creative ideal today because people accepted their contributions in the past. When we talk about Einstein, the words physics and genius come up because people pass that down to us. People in the past had to work within the rules of society and couldn't do anything out of the norm or else they would've faced persecution from the church/state. And if the church/state accepted people's work, it meant that other people could accept it as well. White men in the past get most of the credit today for what they've accomplished because they were the group that was in power. The ideas generated by women and slaves in the past didn't mean much at the time because their status within the society was low. Yet our society doesn't seem to really care about that
When we think of the origin of the material and ideas we have today, we try to identify a face to them. And with that in mind, we usually think of deceased white men. We have plenty of documentations coming from people in our past, like Einstein and Shakespeare. Their ideas and pieces of work were very original during their time, and sometimes were not accepted. But as the years went by, even after their death, more and more people began to realize the importance and genius of their craft. Because of that, we see them as the creative ideal and we build off of their findings and innovations.
At the time, these "dead white men" pushed the boundaries far beyond anybody's wildest imaginations. Being white or male is not the reason they are considered the creative ideal. If anything, being white and male is only relevent to the the time they lived in. Da Vinci, Einstein, Plato and Shakespeare all lived in a time where, no matter what race, being male meant being dominant, and that was accepted. As far as "dead" comes, I believe that is where they get their infamousy from. These men lived in time periods where their creations and ideas were viewed as ridiculous and obsurd. They were crazy! The fact that people still followed their ideals, how they became the foundation of many teachings today, centuries after their death, makes them our "founding fathers" of creativity. Today, we are taught to strive to be the next Einstein (take into consideration "little einstein"; viewings meant for infants and toddlers!), the next Michael Angelo, the next Van-Gough. Everybody wants us to think outside the box. The problem with that is, we have come so damn far that EVERYTHING we create now is considered "outside the box". To be on the same level that Shakespear was on when he came up with his most famous and wildest plays would be considered "normal" today; yet to the people in his time, he was insanely crazy to even think up something of that calliber. So now, we obsess with break-throughs in technology, medicine, green energy, anything that will put us on the map. So that centuries from now, we will be in the textbooks (probably not book, but text kindles or some electronic shit)that will be taught to the future generations. We will all eventually, milleniums from now, end up the "dead white men": of our time, in some form or another. For creativity is endless, and so is the cycle. -Elaina Aldama
Well much of society tends to think of white people as smart, like mentioned Da Vinci & Einstein. Yes these old white man were smart but it was because generally it was white people who were allowed to share there idea and thoughts. They were seen and more dominant and more knowledgable. Back in there day women or latin people were allowed to share there thoughts & opinions. For that reason many took pen-names. Yes these old white man were smart but they also the only ones allowed to share and express themselves. It mant said you dont appreciate someone until they're gone, which is true, and many times that the case for these famous men. Its not that they need to die but that when people realize how valuable they really were. I think we could realate to them more positvely because we have many smart people also and we do have the privilege to share our thoughts.
"Dead, White, Men"... They are the ones, we know as a great creators... And it is not surprising. At that time most of the blacks were slaves and women was not in charge of any thing. Even they were claiming the women who do anything stands out, like making medicine are witch and they had punished cruelly by the judges who decide based on the church's rules. So the group whose lives were already in danger couldn't dare to do anything. Or they hided what they did and no one had chance to know those. As a said; thinking differently, questioning the rules or facts set by church was already life threatening. On the other hand white men was more powerful. Although even their extraordinary works, ideas, creations didn't accepted in their time, they still had more chance to present their ideas. They were white, the church people were white, perhaps those white creators had some good friends in church side. So at least they saved their heads and their works reached till today with their signatures on their work. This is my explanation with the knowledge I have gained. I believe if black or women had equal chance there would be a lot of names from that side too.
The 'dead white man' is often looked at as the creative ideal because, as has been said here, they are often the writers of history. There are many stories, thoughts and ideas that have been lost over time simply because the governing body of the time did not like or accept those ideas. Throughout Western history, the white man has often been the guy in charge. We discussed slaves and women in class, who of course had their moments of creativity, but their ideas were never given any light because of their social status. The white man is often the boss, therefore his ideas beat out all others, and are the ones taught and passed on to generations to come.
The 'dead white man' is usually looked as a creative idea due to the fact that dead white men are the main people that had the say. In the past, women and blacks had no say and even if they created the most unique creations, they were still not recognized for their work. White men such as Shakespeare, were known for his work, like when you hear to be or not to be of course you think of Shakespeare. He was one of the known poets but the only reason why is because of his skin tone and not his creations.
I think the ideal became the "white man" because for most part the civilization hasn't been the most opened minded people. There has been plenty of inventions and creative ideals that have came from Women, African Americans, Mexicans. Take women for an example they finally got the right to vote in the early 20th century, there are just to many prejudices that stop people from thinking out side their "box". Then the "dead" part i believe is because normally it takes time for their concepts to catch on. A lot of their concepts took time for the civilization to catch on and then it they became great. Greatness doesn't die when you do.
all of them they had some creative ideal today we look at all they have done and we see it in a so much different way. The sound of music, knowledge etc... they have showed us everything we might know. They have done so many things to get to where they are now even though they are dead we still know a lot about them and we study about them too.
These men were the Creative Ideal because they were centuries beyond their own time, great minds of their era that have mutated above their colleagues. Einstein was the best of them all in my honest opinion. His work on modern physics has really drastically changed our view of the universe. However, I am a bit biased because of my keen interests in the subject Physics.
These men were the creative ideal because they were way agead of their time. These men are associated with cretivity and being smart because they solved some of the riddles that puzzled us all through the ages, made correlations to things that were never even thought of as being the same. Also these people are considered a creative ideal because they have had a positive effect on society and bettered us for a brighter tomorrow. We can relate to them in our everyday lives because most of their theories on life are proven to be helpful and are still used in our modern day living.
White men control western media. And throughout history their status as white men has allowed them to create and have their art reach a large audience. I wish that we weren't forced to learn about men and read books by mainly men. It seems so natural, that most people don't stop to wonder why we only hear from men. Or why their experiences are so highly valued.
Da Vinci, Einstein, Plato & Shakespeare have all done things that are still remembered and looked upon today. They were the men of their time. They have all either started an idea in society or have just expanded on it so much that it made a huge impact on the world & how we see it. Today we look back on the origins of these ideas & those names (depending on what topic were looking at) are what we associate them with.
These 4 men were considered the creative ideal because they changed the way the world viewed creativity at the time. We consider the "Dead White Men" to be creative because of the fact that they created the boundaries for creativity in art, literature, science, and philosophy, which is what is still taught in schools today. Their ideals are what has been passed down throughout history, which is why the ideals for our creativity is based off of what they paved the road as. Being a white male has always been the dominant one throughout centuries, so that probably helped them pave the way to make an even bigger mark in society. And the fact that they're dead also makes them more influential on society and the views of creativity, because they're ideals are worth more. Like Da Vinci's paintings are worth more now than they ever were when he was living. Also, Shakespeare's plays were never as valued as they are today; they are read all throughout high school and even in college. That shows how much of an impact just these 4 men have had on creativity.
I believe the reason we view "Dead White Men" to be the creative ideal is because in those time periods there just so happened to be a handful of men that changed society as we know it. Also, back then Europeans and Americans were more focused on technological and philosophical advances than most other cultures. These specific men mentioned greatly changed our society but that doesn't necessarily mean that only white dead men can be considered creative.
Da Vince, Einstein, Plate and Shakespeare are considered to be “Dead White Men” because they did not only go against the set of strict rules of the Church but also opened to the new view of creativity, which has been existed until today. Instead of holding the high value of God & Church or keep doing normal things, they asked for crossing the boundaries, taking a risk and thinking outside of the box. Moreover, to prove for their ideas, they contributed a lot in Technology, Art, Poetry…Even though these pieces of art were demonstrated as nonsense or useless hundred years ago, within an impact on society, nowadays, these invention gradually became the creative ideal, which seems like a blueprint for people to follow and achieve.
I believe that white men are considered ideal because as we learned in history, only guys are the one who are recognized for such work. As we go through our book of history, there are few women that were recognized for something good, but that was after fighting for women' rights! Everything goes by step, small steps. I also believe that those "dead white men'' are considered ideal because as i said before, thanks to their huge creativity on either showing their emotions into a drawing, solving problems; going beyond "why does it work that way?, how does it work", helping to a better society. Without their answers, we wouldn't be living the life that we are living right now, we would probably struggling with a simple element, or we wouldn't have light; that is why i consider those "white men" as ideal because they had built a road for us to walk without any issue to worry about!
Dead white mean are considered to be the creative ideal because, they had higher social status in the past. Women and people of color had no social status so their creativity was not recognized. Da Vinci Einstein, Plato and Shakespeare are considered to be the creative ideal because, in their time the had to follow strict moral rules. Also not everyone was considered creative in the past.In this modern day, there are less rules and anyone can be creaive so people do not value creativity as it was in the past.
I think that the reason we think of Da Vinci, Einstein, Plato & Shakespeare as the creative ideal is because they are the origins creative thinking. Shakespear created a whole new way of creating plays, Einstein was a genius even though he had a learning disability. Their creativeness is what we strive to become.
Da Vinci,Einstein, Plato and Shakespeare are known as the "Dead White Men" and creative ideal because they were the specific people in their specific time where they were first acknowledge as crazy or non-creative. Not as genius. It took awhile before their work became acknowledge as creative. They put their passion into their work where eventually all their hard work paid off.
we use "dead white men" as a term to describe the people who contributed to our culture or society through their art and creativity. It is ideal because it is the general aspects of what it takes us to recognize them. We consider them all ideal because they contributed to our society and made new idea's with their creativity. We use their art. Some times we manipulate what we learned from them into something new today
The "Dead white men" are considered as the "creative ideal" because due to their status, they were more recognized for their ideas. They were the ones to set the boundaries for all kinds of creativity. However, likely, all other low social status like women and people have color, did not have their creativity recognized. Therefore, society of that time looked to these white men who have contributed to our society.
Back in those times if someone does not comes from a rich family their ideas will never be known. It's always all bout the money. Even now it's still all about money, but their are more diverse people out there with money. Therefore today we see more creativity from all people. The "creative ideal" has definitely changed over time. Kyle Smith
Why we consider The "Dead white men" as the creative ideal? because they were the foundation of modern creativity. They create the ideas for the future. For an example, Galileo is considered as the "Farther of modern astronomy". His great contribution to the telescope, drove to change the world. He Changed the myth, that ancient philosophers, astronomers and the church believed- geocentric view. But finally he found that it was heliocentric- all the planets circuit around the sun, which was unique serving to the society, useful, skillful. And today, all the great astronomers do their discoveries, result of Galileo's great discovery.
We consider dead white men as the creative ideal because their works were huge revelations in their time. An example being Galileo, his ideas and work were mocked at the time but when his work was proved right, he was hailed as a great mind but was already dead. Also these white dead males were the "founders" of the modern mode of creativity which we take from and use today.
The Dead white men are considered as the creative ideals because of their ideas and philosophy. these men had great minds within their era and started a revolution in creativity but their ideas were not recognized to the public till later. The dead white men have changed the way we see creativity today.
We all use our knowledge from past knowledges that we believe to be true. So the " dead white men" are considered the creative ideal because we use their ideas as a foundation for our newer ideas. Also Da Vinci, Shakespeare, Plato, Einstein are also part of the foundations for our creativity, because from them we use art, poetry, philosophy, science. They have influenced everyone after them and til this day influence our everyday lives. We used their knowledge to help us learn more about the world.
We consider the "dead white male" to be creative because people accepted their views and ideas in the past.Da Vinci, Shakespeare, Plato, Einstein had their own style and views.they all have started an idea in society which expanded on it so much that it made a huge impact on the world and how we see it.
They are considered creative because they revolutionized the game. They are the ones who changed everything. I think If Michael Jackson lived in that time he would have probably been pretty influential.
Da Vinci, Shakespeare, Plato, Einstein were considered as "creative ideal" because they knew how to use their knowledge to change the little "c" become a big "C" for society. They brought their new idea about "creativity" in many areas which still makes a huge impact to human's life until today.
we use "dead white men" as a term to describe the people who contributed to our culture or society through their art and creativity. It is ideal because it is the general aspects of what it takes us to recognize them. We consider them all ideal because they contributed to our society and made new idea's with their creativity. We use their art. Some times we manipulate what we learned from them into something new today
We consider the "dead white men" as in Da Vinci, Plato, Shakespeare, and Einstein to be the creative ideal because their ideas have made an impact in the world of art and creativity and changed the way creativity was viewed upon. Because of these "dead white men" we now have a more modern view of creativity. They were the ones who founded the modern modes of creativity by breaking boundaries that were set on creativity in their time. Today, their works of art are still remembered and looked up to. They have made such a huge impact on the world and how we see it that creativity now has no boundaries.
"Dead white men" such as Da Vinci, Plato, and Einstein have made significant contributions to society in their own respective fields. Their works have help shaped society to what it is today. Nevertheless, there were probably hundreds of others that could have accomplished or even surpass what the group of "dead white men" have. That is so because no one can accomplish very much in any field of thought without devoting her or his life to work and professional development in that field, and a person can do that only if the person has access to resources. Before the 20th century, only the privileged white and male, mostly in Europe and to some extent in North America with very few elsewhere, have had access to those resources.
All four of the dead white males are considerate in creative and benefit to the world. They made a huge impact on the world and how we see it today. Their creative ideas helped us became better at point of view, that they have come up with many ideas and changed the world today in many good way. For example Einstein and Da Vinci , They both have come up with new ideas that changed the way we view to this world today they were succeed because they always researched and tried their best to solved the problems that was against their beliefs and their authority. Also like Plato and Shakespeare, they were against with common beliefs and against with church's jurisdiction. But there are still many people today that are changing the world and searching for the solution to the problems.

ReplyDeleteAt the time, these "dead white men" pushed the boundaries far beyond anybody's wildest imaginations.

ReplyDeleteIt mant said you dont appreciate someone until they're gone, which is true, and many times that the case for these famous men.
ReplyDeleteThe 'dead white man' is often looked at as the creative ideal because, as has been said here, they are often the writers of history.
ReplyDeleteThe 'dead white man' is usually looked as a creative idea due to the fact that dead white men are the main people that had the say.
ReplyDeleteI think the ideal became the "white man" because for most part the civilization hasn't been the most opened minded people.
ReplyDeleteall of them they had some creative ideal today we look at all they have done and we see it in a so much different way.

ReplyDeleteThese men were the creative ideal because they were way agead of their time.
ReplyDeleteWhite men control western media. And throughout history their status as white men has allowed them to create and have their art reach a large audience. I wish that we weren't forced to learn about men and read books by mainly men. It seems so natural, that most people don't stop to wonder why we only hear from men. Or why their experiences are so highly valued.
ReplyDeleteDa Vinci, Einstein, Plato & Shakespeare have all done things that are still remembered and looked upon today. They were the men of their time. They have all either started an idea in society or have just expanded on it so much that it made a huge impact on the world & how we see it. Today we look back on the origins of these ideas & those names (depending on what topic were looking at) are what we associate them with.
ReplyDeleteThese 4 men were considered the creative ideal because they changed the way the world viewed creativity at the time.

ReplyDeleteI believe the reason we view "Dead White Men" to be the creative ideal is because in those time periods there just so happened to be a handful of men that changed society as we know it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that white men are considered ideal because as we learned in history, only guys are the one who are recognized for such work.
ReplyDeleteDead white mean are considered to be the creative ideal because, they had higher social status in the past.
ReplyDeleteI think that the reason we think of Da Vinci, Einstein, Plato & Shakespeare as the creative ideal is because they are the origins creative thinking. Shakespear created a whole new way of creating plays, Einstein was a genius even though he had a learning disability. Their creativeness is what we strive to become.
ReplyDeleteDa Vinci,Einstein, Plato and Shakespeare are known as the "Dead White Men" and creative ideal because they were the specific people in their specific time where they were first acknowledge as crazy or non-creative. Not as genius. It took awhile before their work became acknowledge as creative. They put their passion into their work where eventually all their hard work paid off.
ReplyDeletewe use "dead white men" as a term to describe the people who contributed to our culture or society through their art and creativity. It is ideal because it is the general aspects of what it takes us to recognize them. We consider them all ideal because they contributed to our society and made new idea's with their creativity. We use their art. Some times we manipulate what we learned from them into something new today
ReplyDeleteThe "Dead white men" are considered as the "creative ideal" because due to their status, they were more recognized for their ideas. They were the ones to set the boundaries for all kinds of creativity. However, likely, all other low social status like women and people have color, did not have their creativity recognized. Therefore, society of that time looked to these white men who have contributed to our society.
ReplyDeleteBack in those times if someone does not comes from a rich family their ideas will never be known. It's always all bout the money. Even now it's still all about money, but their are more diverse people out there with money. Therefore today we see more creativity from all people. The "creative ideal" has definitely changed over time.

ReplyDeleteAnd today, all the great astronomers do their discoveries, result of
Galileo's great discovery.

ReplyDeleteWe consider dead white men as the creative ideal because their works were huge revelations in their time.

ReplyDeleteWe all use our knowledge from past knowledges that we believe to be true.

ReplyDeleteThey are considered creative because they revolutionized the game. They are the ones who changed everything. I think If Michael Jackson lived in that time he would have probably been pretty influential.
ReplyDeleteDa Vinci, Shakespeare, Plato, Einstein were considered as "creative ideal" because they knew how to use their knowledge to change the little "c" become a big "C" for society. They brought their new idea about "creativity" in many areas which still makes a huge impact to human's life until today.

ReplyDeleteWe consider the "dead white men" as in Da Vinci, Plato, Shakespeare, and Einstein to be the creative ideal because their ideas have made an impact in the world of art and creativity and changed the way creativity was viewed upon.

ReplyDeleteAll four of the dead white males are considerate in creative and benefit to the world.
